Is MDMA Therapy Effective?

About 12 million Americans have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which influences how they feel and react. For most people, a trigger is usually a traumatic event faced during their lives that causes the response. The condition can affect anyone — young and old, men and women alike — if they’ve lived through a dangerous or troubling event.

The good thing is that there are ways to treat PTSD. Where recovery seems impossible with current medication, it’s always best to seek a second opinion from another experienced counselor. Acera Health provides evidence-based programs tailored to help patients overcome PTSD from traumatic events in their past.

Your Sure Way to Recovery

Acera Health uses specialized treatment plans to address all forms of mental issues. Our intensive word-class treatment program provides a foundation for mental wellness and helps relieve suffering. We have a dedicated team ready to help patients get started on a therapeutic program.

What is MDMA Therapy?

MDMA therapy is a unique therapeutic program that combines the use of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) with specific techniques for the treatment of posttraumatic stress conditions such as PTSD. Methylenedioxymethamphetamine is a psychoactive substance that has long been used for recreational and therapeutic purposes. It’s also known as empathogen or entactogen, a class of drugs that produces feelings of oneness, empathy, and emotional openness.

MDMA therapy is an interdisciplinary treatment that involves both mental and medical health clinicians. It’s a treatment course involving several non-MDMA and MDMA-assisted psychotherapy sessions.

Some products used in this procedure are pharmaceutical grade. Therefore, unlike illegal street products, they don’t have contaminants. These contaminants may include heavy metals, illicit substances, or dangerous chemicals.

However, people with high risks of heart attacks, hypertension, arrhythmias, or strokes do not qualify for this medication. Patients must also stay for eight hours to allow MDMA effects to stabilize.

How is MDMA Used in Therapy?

Although MDMA is a common recreational drug, it has a rich history of therapeutic uses. It stimulates the brain, giving one an energizing feeling that enhances their emotions and heightens their senses.

Hence, therapists use the drug to minimize anxiety and defensiveness, improve mood, and increase relaxation. It also enhances the bond between the patient and the therapist. Since MDMA seems to reduce anxiety associated with past traumatic experiences, it can help increase memory and insight.

Similar to Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, MDMA in a therapeutic setting helps people heal from conditions that are resistant to other treatments. This includes treatment-resistant depression and PTSD.  It’s currently in FDA clinical trials, especially for people with PTSD, a condition affecting about 3.5% of American adults. While MDMA therapy is still under clinical trials, it’s a highly effective way to help people better their mental health.

The study of MDMA-assisted therapy is an inner-directed process. Each session includes allowance, permission, and receptivity provided to what might happen during the session. It develops space for people to engage with inner healing intelligence.

This approach helps clients to revisit traumatic events while keeping emotionally engaged. They can stay engaged even during extreme feelings of pain, anxiety, or grief without being overwhelmed.

The MDMA therapy in California offers a practical, safe setting so clients can benefit fully from the process. The process of psychedelic medicine therapy is a crucial journey that demands attention, time, and care.

At Acera Health, the therapists are dedicated to working in unison with patients. We strive to walk with them with sufficient preparation and support. Understanding that patients are usually the source of their healing process is essential. A therapist and MDMA give patients to access, but the patient must accept and use the medication properly to heal faster.

Which Conditions Can MDMA Treat?

In most cases, therapists integrate MDMA in clinical tests to treat complex, chronic, and severe PTSD. It’s also understudied to learn how it can treat anxiety linked to life-threatening illness, social anxiety in autistic adults, eating disorders, and psychological effects on healthy adults. Before its restriction in the 1980s, MDMA was mainly used for relationship matters, trauma work, couple counseling, and more.

How is MDMA Taken?

MDMA is often taken orally as a powder, pill, or crystal. MDMA-assisted therapy requires three to four MDMA-assisted therapy sessions for a full recovery.

How Long Does MDMA-assisted Therapy Take?

Compared to traditional PTSD therapies, MDMA-assisted therapy can go up to eight hours. During each session, a patient takes a capsule or tablet, and they feel its effects felt in 45 to 60 minutes.

They have two trained therapists who work simultaneously throughout each session. During the therapy, the patient will have four sessions over a few months.  Depending on their response to the treatment, the therapist may reduce the time spent at the clinic. This will make it more effective to heal from PTSD and trauma.

How MDMA is on the Cutting-Edge of Legality in California

MDMA is on the verge of becoming legal in California. It’s not on the list of controlled substances in California’s Uniform Controlled Substances Act. Many mental health professionals stopped administering MDMA-assisted therapy. However, it’s undergone a crucial process toward medical approval in California to bring relief to those who have PTSD.
